DEMOCRACY IN BHUTAN

For those interested in recent political developments in the small Kingdom of Bhutan high up in the Himalaya Mountains, I would suggest to start with this book written by the social scientist Gyambo Sithey titled:

Democracy in Bhutan. The first five years 2008-13.

In the photo, the author is standing next to the Prime Minister of Bhutan (to the far right). This photo was taken when the book was formally launched in the Office of the Prime Minister.

The book covers the lifetime of the first fully democratic parliament and government, following elections in 2008. This was the first time that political parties competed for seats and influence, and the final result gave the ruling party 45 of 47 seats – thus only 2 seats for the opposition. How this played out is well documented in the book, and in general the book documents the five years in a very solid manner. More information is available on the DIPD website.
